Van Heating And Cooling Installation Questions
Every question we get asked about van heating and cooling installation, answered straight.
Questions
How It Works
Do I need both heating and cooling in a van conversion?
Many customers choose both because a van can be too cold at night and too hot in direct sun. Lincolnshire’s flat, exposed terrain makes this especially noticeable across seasons. A combined setup is often the most practical choice if you plan to use the van year-round or sleep in it regularly.
Will fitting air conditioning mean cutting the roof?
Most roof-mounted air conditioning units do require a roof aperture. The converter checks roof panel thickness, existing fittings and structural support before marking out any cut. The aperture is then fitted with a compression gasket and sealed to prevent water ingress.
Is a roof fan enough instead of full air conditioning?
A roof fan improves airflow and helps manage condensation, but it does not cool air the way an air conditioner does. On hot days in direct sun, a fan alone is unlikely to be sufficient. It works well as part of a combined setup alongside a diesel heater for all-season use.
What checks are done before fitting heating or cooling equipment?
The converter checks available space, roof or floor structure, wiring route, duct run options and leak risk. For air conditioning, roof reinforcement and existing rack or array positions are also assessed. Nothing is cut or ordered until those checks are complete.
Does refrigerant handling require any certification?
Yes. Handling refrigerant in a roof air conditioner requires F-Gas certification under UK regulations. The converter arranges a certified operative for this part of the work, keeping the installation compliant and the unit’s warranty valid.
What happens if I delay and keep using a portable heater or fan?
Portable units can manage short-term use, but they do not address condensation, airflow or overnight comfort the way a fixed system does. Damp that builds up over time can damage ply lining and insulation, adding cost to a later conversion job.
